If you follow me on Instagram you definitely know I try to work out as much as possible. Until two years ago I was not sporty at all. I didn’t workout (ever) and I ate everything I wanted. There is nothing wrong with this, but I reached a point where I felt so so bad. I wanted to change this feeling and I did this only because I wanted to do this myself. A very important sidenote: this is very personal. But the healthy and happy mind I got in return (after a lot of work) is priceless! Happy mind = happy life is definitely a thing for me.
Find the sport you love
The most important thing for me was to find a sport that I liked. For years I’ve thought that there was not one single sport that I would like. But I was wrong! There are soooo many different sports these days, there’s no way you can’t find anything you’ll love to do. It turned out that I liked power training in every possible way. I love to the gym on my own, I did personal training, small group trainings and lately I’ve completely lost myself in HIIT. Or better: high intensity interval training. I follow HIIT classes three to four times a week at the coolest boutique gym in town: Ctrl Gym in Bruges.

During HIIT we alternate running exercises with power training. The exercises have a different focus every day. One day this is upper body, the other day it’s lower body, full body or core! And I love the variety in these classes. I would definitely recommend to give it a try. You can try one free HIIT class at Ctrl Gym, the perfect way to discover if this would be something for you.
Happy mind = healthy mind & body = healthy food
Working out is very fun and it gives you strength. But for me to achieve that happy and healthy mind, a change in my food routine was necessary. Martijn (founder of Ctrl Gym) guided me step by step. I counted calories in the past but this was never fun because this involved a lot of ingredients that I did not like. Martijn made me a schedule with food that I actually love. Since some of you ask me what I eat in a day, here are a few options. Sidenote: this works for me but is very personal, copying this won’t give you necessarily the same result.
What I eat in a day
Breakfast
- Granola with milk
- Yoghurt (low fat) with honey and a banana
- Oatmeal with apple and honey
- Sunny side up!
Lunch
- Bread slices with a low fat topping (chicken eg.) and soup
Dinner
- Mash potato with carrots or other vegetables I love & minced chicken
- Low fat spaghetti bolognaise
- Salmon with sweet potato fries (airfryer) and vegetables
Snacks
- Protein shake/bar
- Fruit
- Skyr
- Rice crackers with cottage cheese
When I achieve the shape I want, it is all about balance! For me that means during the working week, I eat healthy every day. In the weekend I enjoy a lot of time with friends and family and I allow myself to eat whatever I want. Balance & consistency are key and I’m a much happier person than two years ago.
